Marketing & Communications Internship

Program Description

As a digital marketing and strategic communications member of Innovation Incubated, you will be introduced to projects that deal specifically with expanding brands with exposure and outreach tools and techniques. The Digital Marketing & Strategic Communications Team is responsible for writing daily publications, managing social media accounts, developing digital graphics and marketing material for distribution, as well as analyzing marketing data essential to decision making for brands. Marketing and communications members are introduced to an atmosphere of supported creativity that pushes the envelope of how diverse brands are viewed.

Furthermore, at SGI, we enhance the creativity of our members with collaborative, trans-disciplinary environments in order to promote innovations that increase the practice of One Ecosystem Health. This considers the collective environment and social context when branding and strategically communicating a message. Thus, it goes without saying that the Strat-Comm members will uphold our values at She Grows It when taking on the stark challenge of branding for future forward firms that will change the world.

Our She Grows It team will not only offer you valuable tools to cultivate your communication and branding abilities, but also we will support you in skills that relate to development critical to a globalizing workforce. We use tools that empower and educate our members. For instance, we hold professional seminars and lectures that aim to teach methods of framework, introduce new perspectives and also challenge perspectives. Growth and development for practical use in today's ever changing world is our priority. We want to ensure that each member has the opportunity to grow their skill set in such a way that employers choose our interns first. In summary, we will provide you the necessary research and analytical mechanisms to support your academic career, whilst also receiving training that will build your effectiveness as a professional in your industry of choice. 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Currently enrolled or a recent graduate of an accredited university; will provide internship credit, if applicable.

  • Passion for marketing, branding, and/or strategic communications.

  • Specific interest in political and/or policy communications; specific interest in financial and/or economic communications; and specific interest in environmental and/or technology communications. 

  • Experience with social media management and marketing.

  • Experience in design and developing digital graphics.

  • Familiar with marketing and media programs such as Canva, SquareSpace. Wix, Prezi, Visme, Adobe, Mail Chimp, Buffer, and others not listed here. 

  • Familiar with web-based research programs, such as Google Suite, Google, Google Scholar, J-Stor. 

  • Familiar with spreadsheet programs, such as Excel, Google Spreadsheet.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise creativity.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills- particularly copywriting.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in teams and across cultures. 

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.

Benefits and Compensation

Internships are unpaid. However, we work to prepare our interns for the next step in their career through real-industry experience, mentorship, industry exposure and networking opportunities in Washington, D.C.; Accra, Ghana; Dakar, Sénégal; Freetown, Sierra Leone; Kinshasa, DRC; and other locations. We provide interns with training opportunities, travel opportunities, references, relevant workforce tracking, and peer-to-peer leadership and management experience.
